Classic Photoshop Effects 7 - Museum Ad

This is part seven of a series that chronicles my journey through Scott Kelby’s book, Classic Photoshop Effects.

In this effect, we are taught how to create a shadow to an object. The look was taken further to play with more aspects of lighting, like how would an object look with a hard light on it? How would the foundation of the object reflect that light?

Here is the original image that I started with. I took it off of wikimedia commons (click the image to go to the source):

By playing with the lighting, here is my resulting poster:

Classic Photoshop Effects 4 - Gradient Colors

This is part four of a series that chronicles my journey through Scott Kelby’s book, Classic Photoshop Effects.

In this tutorial, Kelby shows how creating a gradient towards the bottom of an image that becomes the color of another object in the photo makes for a great poster. I began by searching for a high quality photo, and came across this photo of an iguana at wikimedia (click to go to source):

After looking at the photo for a while, I asked my brother-in-law Adam what he thought that it would make a good advertisement for. After deciding on suntan lotion, we took the challenge. This is what we came up with:

pizbuin-copy.jpg

We found the Piz Buin bottle after searching Google for suntan lotion. We decided to go a little modern with this ad, due to the modern look of the Piz Buin bottle. I originally faded the poster into the blue of the darker ocean parts. Adam’s idea was to add the texture of the rocks back into the blue. We both liked the effect. With a glow behind the main message, we found a poster we could live with.

Amazingly, one of the very hardest parts was to come up with text to fill the poster with. We could just imagine marketing teams sitting around a table brainstorming. While we feel that a few more hours of brainstorming would have come up with the perfect slogans, we decided that 10 minutes was enough for this quick and dirty ad campaign.

Open Source Alternatives

free.jpg

My friend Jay asked me the other day if I knew of any open source Flash creators.  I didn’t offhand, but then I came across some sites that are pretty useful.

Open Source as Alternative (http://www.osalt.com/) - choosing from categories that range from business to web development, this website gives a handful of alternatives to the commercial software offerings.  You can also browse the open source solutions by themselves if you desire.  A well-organized site that has let me know about a few programs that I haven’t heard of before.

Top 50 Open Source Alternatives (blog post on http://whdb.com) - this blog post has a more succinct listing for those who just want an overview of what is out there.  Each software offering has a brief description.

Open Lazlo (http://www.openlaszlo.org/) - The Flash alternative.  I have just heard of this package, but it looks interesting and easy to use.  It helps you to create rich Internet applications and seems to have great support.  I am sure I’ll be looking more into this for myself in the future.

P.S.  The Free logo was created using the GIMP, an open source image manipulation program.
