Classic Photoshop Effects 4 - Gradient Colors
This is part four of a series that chronicles my journey through Scott Kelby’s book, Classic Photoshop Effects.
In this tutorial, Kelby shows how creating a gradient towards the bottom of an image that becomes the color of another object in the photo makes for a great poster. I began by searching for a high quality photo, and came across this photo of an iguana at wikimedia (click to go to source):
After looking at the photo for a while, I asked my brother-in-law Adam what he thought that it would make a good advertisement for. After deciding on suntan lotion, we took the challenge. This is what we came up with:

We found the Piz Buin bottle after searching Google for suntan lotion. We decided to go a little modern with this ad, due to the modern look of the Piz Buin bottle. I originally faded the poster into the blue of the darker ocean parts. Adam’s idea was to add the texture of the rocks back into the blue. We both liked the effect. With a glow behind the main message, we found a poster we could live with.
Amazingly, one of the very hardest parts was to come up with text to fill the poster with. We could just imagine marketing teams sitting around a table brainstorming. While we feel that a few more hours of brainstorming would have come up with the perfect slogans, we decided that 10 minutes was enough for this quick and dirty ad campaign.
